Durbanville’s Feast Of The Grape: Grape Stomping and Wine Sipping.

The boy and I have temporarily left the delights of Pringle Bay to live on a farm while he carries out some project work. So it was quite by accident that we found ourselves in Durbanville, home to 12 of the Cape Town region’s top vineyards. The Durbanville Wine Valley sits in the Tygerberg Hills, 20 minutes from Cape Town.

The vineyards “are united in their passion to reflect the Durbanville terroir in all their wines. The result is a magnificent range of intense, fruit-driven yet elegant wines, as different from each other as the slopes that create them and the individual personalities who craft them.”

As you may have picked up on in previous posts, I enjoy a glass (or two) of wine. I especially enjoy it when it’s consumed in a celebratory fashion. So when offered the chance to experience Durbanville’s Feast Of The Grape festival with wine tasting, grape stomping and live music, I didn’t have to think twice!

Ways to make your time in beautiful South Africa absolutely awesome!

South Africa is a large, beautiful and, in many places unspoiled country. It offers visitors world heritage sites, mountains, beaches, cities, adventure and wildlife in abundance while also sharing its unique traditions and customs. Visiting Africa can seem daunting to many people and it has been said that South Africa is a perfect destination for ‘first timers’ As much as the country is more similar to the western world than elsewhere in Africa, there are still huge cultural differences. It is these that make South Africa the magnificent place that it is.

Mumford and Sons: Gentlemen Of The Road.

I like Mumford and Sons. A lot. I have seen them perform in 3 of the 4 continents I have lived in. I once drove 510 miles in -5 degrees, to a sold out show in Philly in the hopes that the ticket scouts would be kind. Their $250 / ticket ‘price’ wasn’t kind so I had to drink wine instead. However, Mumford and Sons made up for it the next month in Montreal (and Philly is a pretty cool city anyway!)

This past weekend I saw Mumford and Sons during their first ever stint in South Africa. Apparently they have been wanting to come here for a while but haven’t been able to manage it logistically. Originally their tour dates consisted of just 3 dates across the 3 main cities. These shows sold out in less than a minute forcing them to add more dates to keep fans who have ‘been waiting 7 years’ to see them, happy!

When I am not wearing my Princess tiara I wear my Global Handprints hat meaning I am very lucky and get to try new experiences that I would like to include in the Volunteer Road Trip itineraries I put together. While in the Western Cape we are putting together road trip routes here that will compliment the routes currently on offer in KwaZulu-Natal. This region is known not only for a large mountain and a (more) effective government than oner provinces, but also for the wine tasting, therefore no itinerary will be complete without spending time at a vineyard or two!

So we unexpectedly found ourselves in the Mother City. A last minute visit to Cape Town from some of my favourite people from home and more tyre troubles led us to speed down the last bit of the west coast (with promises that we will be back) to get to civilisation, tyres and friendly faces.
